“How much does it cost to immigrate?” is a question we often hear.
With the Federal Skilled Worker draws and Canadian Experience Class draws resuming within a couple of days, we’ll focus on the costs relating to Express Entry route.
The Express Entry program itself is free, although there are some costs to take into consideration before you would be able to create an Express Entry profile. You would need to write an English language test (IELTS-General or CELPIP) and have your education compared to a Canadian equivalent for Federal Skilled Worker and Provincial Nomination programs. These costs are estimated as follow:
· English Language Tests: $280 - $350 per person
· Education Credential Assessment: $147 - $200 per person
· Passports: costs vary per country
Your spouse or common-law partner does not need to provide English test results or an education credential assessment, although it is recommended as it could increase your overall Comprehensive Ranking System score (CRS). Your spouse can contribute up to 30 points towards your CRS score depending on their language scores and education.
Unless you qualify for the Canadian Experience Class, you’ll need to provide proof of funds as well. Here is the current proof of funds needed based on your family size:
Number Of Family Members | CAD |
1 | $13,310 |
2 | $16,570 |
3 | $20,371 |
4 | $24,733 |
5 | $28,052 |
6 | $31,638 |
7 | $35,224 |
Each Additional Family Member | $3,586 |
Once you have received an Invitation to Apply you can expect to pay the following:
· Government fees: $1,365 per adult
· Government fees: $230 per child
· Biometrics: $85.00 for each person aged 14+
· Medicals: $250.00 +- for each person
· Courier costs to deliver and receive passports back from the Visa Application Centre (VAC)
Don’t forget to factor in your transport costs to Canada as well!
Additional costs, such as shipping of your personal belongings or bringing your pets can add significantly to your overall immigration budget.
The above costs are based on a do-it-yourself application.
